"Get off o' me, you little twerp!"
Tails struggled to right himself in the constantly-moving machine. "No, Sonic!" He grabbed onto the sentient chip sticking out of a port on the wall. "I'm your best friend! I know this isn't you, and I'm gonna bring you back!"
With a final heave, Tails wrenched the chip from the wall. He jumped from the cockpit and watched with Amy and Knuckles: Electricity sizzled, a hedgehog yelled, and the Ancient mech suit hissssed as it shuttered violently and stopped. The previously-red lights now glowed a light blue.
Sonic blinked blearily from inside, his eyes now back to their normal green. "Ugh..." he groaned. "What happened? I couldn't think straight... nothing made sense." His face scrunched up as a hand went to his head. "My head's pounding like Eggman's Drum Bot."
The gang whooped, pumping fists and high-fiving. "Sonic! You're back!" Amy cheered.
Tails jumped in with explanations, waving the dislodged chip in his hand. "The mech suit was controlling you. But you don't have to worry about that anymore!" He casually chucked the piece of metal aside, where Amy promptly smashed it with her hammer.
Sonic jumped out of the mech himself, only just sticking a wobbly landing. Amy quickly jumped forward to steady him.
Sonic nodded in thanks and gave his friends a wearied smile. "Thanks for knocking some sense into me, guys. You especially, Tails. Thanks for... for just doing your thing."
Tails grinned widely. Suddenly, he threw himself into Sonic and hugged him. Sonic paused in surprise. Then his arms circled the fox in turn and he leaned his head against his.
"I'm just glad you're back," said Tails, his face buried in his best friend's fur.
"Same." Sonic gave a relieved sigh, smirking. "I think I prefer my feet on the ground anyway. "
The two boys chuckled. Then Sonic stopped.
"Hey, Tails... I'm suddenly remembering calling you a... a twerp. Twice. I'm... I'm really sorry. And I'm sorry for making fun of your inventions-- I don't really think that, honest--"
Tails immediately pulled back and looked Sonic in the eye. "That wasn't you, Sonic; that was the suit talking. I know that. Don't beat yourself up over it."
Sonic shook his head at himself, scowling. "I shouldn'ta gotten in that suit in the first place... not without you scanning it, anyway. That was stupid."
"Nevermind that now, Sonic," Amy cut in gently, giving him a genuine smile. "Like Tails said... we're just glad you're back to normal. Mech-controlled you was... scary."
"Yeah! Since when did town hero Sonic start hanging out with Eggman?" Knuckles grabbed Sonic around the shoulders and gave him a Knuckles-sized noogie.
"Knux, stop, stop it!" Sonic half laughed, half groaned. "My head already hurts!"
The echidna released him, chuckling. As Sonic ruffled his quills back into place, he couldn't believe it as he stared at his friends' smiles: were they really forgiving him, just like that?
Tails spoke again. "Hey, why don't we all go by that new falafel place as a celebration?"
"Oh, I like that idea," Sonic suddenly grinned. "I feel like I haven't eaten in like, a day and a half!"
Amy giggled. "That's because you haven't eaten in a day and a half, Sonic-- you wouldn't leave your suit!"
Sonic's eyes got wide. "Boy... now I'm really glad you guys got me outta that mech thing; I might have never eaten another chili dog again!"
Amy rolled her eyes and smiled. Tails and Knuckles laughed.
